Craftsman and Mission Style

Craftsman Style Fabrics

“Craftsman” is both a descriptive term and the trade name for the handcrafted furniture made by, or in the style of, the arts and crafts advocate Gustav Stickely. From 1901 Stickley published “The Craftsman” magazine which promoted the virtues of individual design, handwork, and architecture. In the US, “Craftsman” as a term was used interchangeably for  “Arts and Crafts”.

Mission Style Fabrics

“Mission” style is term mostly used on the east coast.  Like Craftsman, Mission was originally a trade name which originated in 1898 with Joseph McHugh who, in New York, saw photographs of the interior of the 1894 Bernard Maybeck designed Swedenborgian church in San Francisco.  He copied the style and in error described his line as deriving from California missions.
