The term 'Ecru' is often used to describe fabrics such as linen and silk in their unbleached and undyed state. Ecru comes from the French word écru, which means literally 'raw' or 'unbleached'.
Whether anyone can definitively tell the difference between Ecru and Beige is debatable. Ecru is also very close to Cream - the latter perhaps having a little more of a yellow tint. Amusingly, in the Disney film Cinderella II: Dreams Come True, Cinderella is asked by her ladies-in-waiting Beatrice and Daphne which colour is correct for the royal banquet, the choices being cream or ecru. She guesses ecru, but is told by Prudence that the correct colour is cream. Cinderella replies that there isn't any difference, prompting Prudence to say: "So much to learn. So little time."
