Prairie Home Styles

The low-slung Prairie style was created and popularized by Frank Lloyd Wright based on the principle that houses should serve basic needs without being too fussy.  The Prairiestyle prefers simplicity and is said to the origin of Modernist and Bauhaus architecture. The defining characteristic of Prairie homes is their emphasis on horizontal lines inside wide open floor plans. These open spaces are meant to create flow inside the house, which aids both functionality and beauty.

Prairie home key elements include:

  • Clean horizontal lines: most details in a prairie home including bricks, trim and wooden features are oriented horizontally.
  • Simple natural materials: stone, wood, and brick to let the natural show through.
  • Built-in furniture
  • Horizontal long roofs are a crucial feature of prairie architecture.
  • Open, flowing interiors which create spaces for entertainment, centered on open living and dining spaces.
  • Rows of small windows often arranged together to give the illusion of a glass wall.
