Famous Artists Katsushika Hokusai - Fine Wind, Clear Morning Cotton Linen Print
Description
The Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji series is one of Hokusai's most iconic works - historically important as establishing the series of ukiyo-e prints. This print from the series, known by its nickname 'Red Fuji' is a particularly renowned work. Compared to the Great Wave painting it is compositionally straightforward, with the bulk of Mt. Fuji traversed by trailing clouds. The scene was possibly inspired by the mountain dyed red by the dawn sun, the 'fine winds' may be summer breezes blowing from the south. Here the red colouration brings the mountain alive in a way that other artists had not previously achieved.
