Guinevere Medieval
Field of Cloth of Gold
Product Code: LF9350
A French design of the 16th Century derived from Henry VIII's meeting with Francis I of France in 1520 at the Field of the Cloth of Gold - a site in Balinghem, between Ardres in France and Guînes in the then-English Pale of Calais. The meeting, which is said to have been the last great display of medieval chivalry, was intended to increase the bond of friendship between the two kings following the Anglo-French treaty of 1514. Each king tried to outshine the other, with dazzling tents and clothes, huge feasts, music, jousting and games. The tents and the costumes of each royal retinue displayed so much cloth of gold, an expensive fabric woven with silk and gold thread, that the site of the meeting was named after it. Unfortunately, the meeting did not end well for Henry as he challenged Francis to a wrestling match which he quickly lost. This luxurious fabric pays homage to that momentous chivalric moment in history.
