Design for a tablecloth in 1934 by the famous American textile designer, Marguerita Mergentime. Mergentime's avant guarde designs were way ahead of her time, and laid the foundations for much of what is now seen as modernism and 'mid-century'. Working in 1930s New York, she became well known for her striking table cloths and napkins, with her hallmark bright and bold use of colours. She took the name from Getrude Stein's libretto in the opera 'Four Saints in Three Acts'. The innovative aspect to this fabric design is that the design is not just dots - the dots form two sides of a bold border for a large blue rectangle. In 1934 this was quite a radical proposition. Now reproduced as a high quality cotton linen fabric suitable for upholstery or curtain use.
